Grindhouse: Planet Terror

I didn't mean for this to start my Zombie marathon, or even be a part of the marathon.  I've got Romero's films on the way from Netflix, and had planned to start with those tomorrow.  I also happened to get this from Netflix yesterday, after far too long on my queue.  I didn't realize that it was a Zombie film.  I was pleasantly surprised.

The campiness of Planet Terror is wonderful.  The Zombies are easy enough to kill, and far too many uninfected survive.  But, the gore is unbelievable.  Sure, it's Evil Dead gore, with little realism, but who needs realism when you can have dripping, pus-covered nastiness?

Sure, they beat you over the head with the idea of Cherry fulfilling her destiny and using her useless skills when fate plunges her into catastrophe.  The "two against the world" thing is too cheesy to be excused as camp.  Yet, I couldn't help but feel charmed in the midst of the explosions and goo.  The importance of the BBQ recipe to the conveniently-prepared-for-the-end-of-the-world TJ is great, even if the blood-as-secret-recipe idea falls on its face.  And who doesn't love the plea for mercy from a Zombie because he lost everything killing Bin Laden?  The film moves fast enough and kills enough babies to make up for the failed ideas.

While the film's "camp" often becomes simply an excuse to keep trying silly ideas, some of them pay off wonderfully.  Who wouldn't want to be led to a new world by a former go-go dancer with a heart of gold and leg filled with ammo?
